IMMEDIATE RELEASE
BROOKLYN - Veterans organizations in Brooklyn and beyond are invited to
participate in the annual New Utrecht Liberty Weekend
Saturday, June 5, and Sunday, June 6, in Bensonhurst.

Historic New Utrecht, the New
Utrecht Liberty Pole Association and the New Utrecht
Reformed Church, Liberty Weekend is held on the grounds of the 327-year-old
church where for the first time the sanctuary has been closed for extensive repair
and restoration. Each year hundreds of visitors participate in the weekend
activities, including a band concert and parade.
Among the events this year is a commemoration of the 60th anniversary of D-Day
on Sunday, June 6.
From 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, visitors to the historic church complex, at
84th St. (Liberty Pole Blvd.) and 18th Ave., can walk through a Living History
Civil War Encampment prepared by the 14th Brooklyn Regiment, Company H on the
church lawn, featuring the Cannon of Winslow Battery D. Historical displays will
be presented in the Parish House.
Tours of the church's Old New Utrecht Cemetery, dating from 1654, will be given
Saturday at 11:30 a.m. and Sunday at 10 a.m. The cemetery is at 16th Ave.
and 85th St.
Saturday at 7:15 p.m., the Interschool
Orchestra Concert Band under the direction of Brian P. Worsdale performs on
the church lawn.
The parade will be held Sunday along 84th St. from the church grounds to the
cemetery following an 11 a.m. all-faith worship service in the Parish House. A
ceremony will be held at the Nathaniel Woodhull Monument in the cemetery.

Closing ceremonies will be held at the 106-foot-high Liberty
Pole, the last of its kind in the nation, on the church front lawn.
