Holy/Maundy Thursday
As
The Desciples Gathered 'Round
Isaac Watts, 1709 1.
As the desciples gathered 'round,
Passover bread, He shared with them,
Dark was the night He was betrayed,
Jesus, our Savior, while He prayed. 2.
Maker of earth, and heav'n above,
Breaking the bread, and sharing love.
Bread that was body, broken for all,
Given to those who heard His call. 3.
"This is my body, Take and eat,
My body broken, sore and beat,
Do this in mem'ry of my death
Which brings new life, new life and breath." 4.
Taking the cup within His hand,
He prayed to God, and gave Him thanks,
Then with His face a shining glow
He spoke again to His small band. 5.
This is my blood which is spilled for you,
For peace with God, and life anew.
Oft as you drink it, think of me,
And of my blood, 'Twas shed for thee. 6.
Whene'er we drink this holy cup,
We feel the love of Christ anew.
His flesh and life He gave for me,
That I might live eternally. Amen.
Tis
midnight, and on Olive's brow
W.B. Tappan (1794-1849) 1.
'Tis midnight; and on Olive's brow
The star is dimmed that lately shone:
'Tis midnight; in the garden, now,
The suffering Saviour prays alone. 2.
'Tis midnight; and from all removed,
The Saviour wrestles lone with fears;
E'en that disciple whom He loved
Heeds not His Master's grief and tears. 3.
'Tis midnight; and for others' guilt
The Man of Sorrows weeps in blood;
Yet He who hath in anguish knelt,
Is not forsaken by His God. 4.
'Tis midnight; and from heav'nly plains
Is borne the song that angels know;
Unheard by mortals are the strains
That sweetly soothe the Savior's woe. |
